Four different tracks fill this floor-standing rolling ball sculpture with constant motion. One of the most dramatic features is a long, narrow coil that begins near the top and winds nearly all the way to the bottom of the sculpture.

An eight-inversion loop-de-loop cuts through the center of the piece. The marble exits the loops with a strong backspin, which actually slows its forward motion before sending it into another series of loops near the bottom. These tracks double back on themselves in a pretzel-like shape before eventually returning the marble to the lift.

The other three paths weave from top to bottom through the pie-shaped frame, with long stretches of wavy, bumpy and curving track. Along the way, the marbles encounter a ball-collecting tipping arm, several individual tipping arms, flat spirals and other kinetic elements. With four paths operating at once, there's almost always something happening somewhere in the sculpture.

This custom rolling ball sculpture was built in my California studio for a dentist's office in Denmark, where it gives patients something entertaining to watch—and perhaps a welcome distraction from their dental appointment.
