This unusual tabletop rolling ball sculpture was commissioned by Duramax Marine to showcase something at the heart of their business: bearings.

Instead of simply displaying the bearings alongside the sculpture, I incorporated them directly into the marble paths. As the balls travel through the piece, they actually roll through several of the company’s bearings on their way back to the bottom.

Three separate tracks keep the sculpture moving, including a loop d’ loop, a tall skinny coil, and plenty of twisting, curving track packed into the compact frame.

I enjoy commissions like this because the sculpture can do more than attract attention—it can incorporate a company’s own product into the kinetic action. The result is part sculpture, part product display, and something people are naturally inclined to stop and watch.
