No batteries. No electricity. Once this small desktop rolling ball sculpture gets started, the marbles operate the mechanism themselves.

Load the queue at the top and release the first marble. It travels through the sculpture until it reaches a tipping arm near the bottom. The weight of the arriving marble activates a mechanical linkage that releases the next marble from the queue above. That marble makes the journey, triggers the mechanism again, and the cycle continues—all powered by gravity.

Along the way, the marbles travel through horizontal and vertical zig-zags, winding curved tracks, and the tipping-arm mechanism. Just before another marble is released, a little “ding” announces that the next run is about to begin.

I particularly enjoy mechanisms like this because the marble isn't simply traveling through the sculpture—it becomes part of the machine that controls what happens next. With no motor or electrical components, the timing and sequencing are created entirely through mechanical interaction.
