These two rolling ball sculptures were built back-to-back as a matching pair. They share the same compact frame design, dimensions, motorized chain lift and 1" glass marbles, along with a similar collection of tracks and kinetic elements.

One of my favorite additions to these sculptures is the set of small brass bells scattered throughout the tracks. Each produces a distinctive ting when struck by a passing marble—loud enough to hear clearly, but not enough to overwhelm the sculpture. Because the marbles continually take different paths, the bells ring in an unpredictable sequence that sounds surprisingly similar to an indoor wind chime. It's a wonderful experience. 

The bells can also be removed individually. Taking out one or two changes the sound and timing, or they can all be removed when quieter operation is preferred.

Both sculptures contain plenty of classic rolling ball sculpture elements: tipping arms, loop-d-loops, wavy track, vertical and horizontal zig-zags, hairpin turns, track splitters and ball collectors. At the bottom, the three separate tracks empty onto a perforated flat steel collection plate, where the marbles are gathered together and funneled back into a single track leading to the chain lift.

All of this is contained in a relatively small footprint of approximately 20 inches wide by 28 inches tall, making these substantial kinetic sculptures without requiring a large amount of display space.
