This was my first rolling ball sculpture built specifically to live inside a display case. I had the mahogany-colored wood case sitting in my shop for quite a while before finally deciding it was time to bring it to life and build the rolling ball sculpture it was meant to have.
The sculpture is carefully designed to fit inside the case and features three tracks, a chain lift, and colorful 1-inch glass marbles. Along the way, the marbles travel through tipping arms, loop-d-loops, a horizontal zig-zag, wavy track, and multiple feet of regular track winding throughout the sculpture.
LED lighting mounted inside the case adds another dimension to the piece. The colors can be changed to suit the room or mood, and the sculpture looks especially dramatic at night with the room dark and only the rolling ball sculpture illuminated.
Several bells placed throughout the sculpture add a gentle wind-chime effect as the marbles pass, bringing sound to an already busy and dynamic piece. The combination of movement, light, color, and sound makes #349 especially fun to watch.
