What Is a Rolling Ball Sculpture?
A rolling ball sculpture, often shortened to RBS, is a form of kinetic art that uses rolling balls as the moving part of the sculpture. The balls travel along tracks and through different mechanical elements, using gravity to carry them from a higher point to a lower one. Along the way they might travel through loops and spirals, change direction at track switches, trigger moving arms, circle around bowls, race down long sections of track or encounter any number of other elements before eventually reaching the bottom.
Some rolling ball sculptures run continuously, with a motorized lift carrying the balls back to the top so the entire process can begin again. Others don't use electricity at all. The balls might be placed at the top by hand and released with a lever, or the sculpture can use the energy of one arriving ball to release the next one waiting at the top.
I've been building rolling ball sculptures for more than 20 years, and I've made all of these types. To me, the lift or method of release isn't what makes something a rolling ball sculpture. It's the combination of the ball, the tracks, the mechanical elements and the movement through the sculpture that defines it.
I tend to think of an RBS as a machine that becomes art when it's finished. It has to work mechanically, but how the tracks move through the space, the shape of the frame, the placement of the different elements and even the timing of the balls all contribute to the way the finished sculpture looks and feels.
Is It a Rolling Ball Sculpture, Marble Machine or Marble Run?
There are quite a few names used for things that move balls around. You'll hear rolling ball sculpture, marble machine, marble run, ball machine and sometimes Rube Goldberg machine used to describe things that may look somewhat similar.
There isn't a strict rule saying one term is right and all the others are wrong. I use rolling ball sculpture because I think it best describes what I make. The rolling ball is an important part of the work, but the finished piece is also intended to stand on its own as a sculpture.
A marble run can be as simple as a track carrying a marble from a high point to a low point. Many are toys or construction sets designed to be assembled, taken apart and rearranged. A marble machine usually implies more mechanical activity, although even that term covers an enormous variety of things. A rolling ball sculpture can share characteristics with both, but I think of it as a permanent piece of kinetic art built around the movement of the balls.
A rolling ball sculpture also isn't necessarily a Rube Goldberg machine. A Rube Goldberg machine usually uses an intentionally complicated sequence of events to accomplish a particular task. And a Rube Goldberg machine needs to be reset before it can be restarted. An RBS may contain mechanisms that look very Rube Goldberg-like, but usually there's no final task to accomplish. The journey is the purpose. The ball rolls through the sculpture because watching it make that journey is the whole point.
How Does a Rolling Ball Sculpture Work?
The basic principle is incredibly simple: put a ball somewhere high and let gravity bring it down.
Actually making that interesting and reliable is where things get complicated.
Once a ball is released, the tracks are built with enough slope for gravity to keep it moving. The challenge is controlling that movement. If a track is too steep, the ball can gain too much speed and become difficult to control. If it's too flat, the ball can slow down and stop, especially after dust begins accumulating on the rails. Curves need enough banking to keep the ball on the track, while elements such as loops require the ball to arrive with enough speed to make it all the way through.
A ball rolling down two pieces of rail looks incredibly simple, but the speed of that ball affects everything that comes afterward. A small change in slope near the top can change how the ball behaves several feet farther down the sculpture.
Eventually gravity wins and the ball reaches the bottom. What happens next depends entirely on the type of rolling ball sculpture.
Manual Rolling Ball Sculptures
Some of the simplest RBS designs I make don't have a lift at all. I build small desktop sculptures where several marbles can be placed by hand into a queue at the top. A hand-operated lever releases either an individual marble or, depending on the design, all of the waiting marbles onto the tracks.
The balls make their way through the sculpture and collect at the bottom. When they're finished, you pick them up, put them back into the queue and do it again.
I particularly like this style for children because it's interactive. Instead of simply standing back and watching a machine operate, the person becomes part of the process. They're responsible for loading the marbles and releasing them. They're also portable, relatively simple mechanically and don't need to be plugged into anything. You can put one on a table and use it anywhere.
The sculpture doesn't have to run forever to be a rolling ball sculpture. Sometimes putting the marbles at the top and pushing the lever is part of the fun.
Semi-Automatic Rolling Ball Sculptures
I also build what I think of as semi-automatic rolling ball sculptures. These are an interesting middle ground between a completely manual piece and one with a powered lift.
A group of marbles is loaded into a queue at the top of the sculpture. The first ball is released and makes its way through the tracks. When it reaches the bottom, the ball mechanically activates a lever that releases the next marble waiting at the top. That marble makes the journey, reaches the bottom and releases another one.
No motor and no electricity are needed. Each arriving ball triggers the release of the next one.
Depending on the sculpture and how many marbles are loaded into it, the process can continue for just a few minutes or as long as 15 minutes. Eventually the last marble reaches the bottom and the sculpture stops. You collect the balls, put them back at the top and start the process again.
I like this design because the sculpture appears to be operating on its own even though there's no powered lift. The energy initially stored by placing all of those marbles at the top is gradually used as they make their individual trips downward.
Continuous Motorized Rolling Ball Sculptures
For larger sculptures, I generally use a motorized lift. Instead of stopping when all of the marbles reach the bottom, the sculpture collects them and mechanically carries them back to the top.
I commonly use either a chain lift with individual ball pickups or a rotating helical lift. Once a ball reaches the top, it's released back onto the tracks and gravity takes over again. At the bottom it returns to the lift and starts another trip.
This allows the sculpture to operate continuously without someone standing there putting the balls back at the top. That's particularly useful for larger wall-mounted and free-standing pieces, as well as sculptures installed in public spaces where the movement needs to continue without someone operating them.
The motor isn't actually driving the ball through the tracks. Its job is simply to raise the ball against gravity. Once released at the top, gravity does the rest of the work.
Manual, semi-automatic and motorized sculptures all use the same basic idea. Give the ball height, release it and control what happens on the way down. The main difference is simply what happens after it gets there.
Why Are There So Many Different Tracks?
One of the things I enjoy about rolling ball sculpture is that there doesn't have to be a single path.
I often use track switches or splitters near the top of a sculpture to send the balls onto several different routes. One ball might go through a loop while another travels through a spiral somewhere else. Another may be moving slowly across the sculpture while a faster ball passes behind it on a completely different track.
That creates much more interesting movement than simply watching one ball follow the same path repeatedly. Even though the tracks themselves don't change, the timing of the balls can. Your attention moves around the sculpture as different things happen in different places.
The number of paths depends partly on the size of the sculpture. A small tabletop piece may only need a couple of tracks, while a large wall-mounted or free-standing sculpture needs more activity to fill the space. There's a practical limit too. Every additional path has to physically fit around all of the others without interfering with them.
What Happens to the Balls Along the Way?
The tracks connecting the top and bottom are only part of an RBS. Much of the personality comes from the elements the balls encounter along the way.
I regularly build loop-d-loops, tall skinny spirals, flat spirals, zig-zags, hairpin turns, track switches, tipping arms, spinners and other elements. Some primarily change the appearance and movement of the ball, while others perform a mechanical function. A switch can determine which path a ball takes, for example, while a tipping arm may use the weight of the ball to create another movement before sending it farther down the sculpture.
Some elements require considerably more speed than others. A loop needs enough energy to carry the ball up and over the top. A long gradual track can be much slower. Part of designing a sculpture is managing those differences so that a ball leaves one element with the right amount of speed for whatever comes next.
I like having a variety because following the ball is part of the experience. It may move slowly enough for you to watch it for several seconds, suddenly accelerate into a loop, disappear behind another part of the sculpture and emerge somewhere completely different.
What Are Rolling Ball Sculptures Made From?
Rolling ball sculptures can be made from many different materials. I've seen artists work with steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, wood, plastic and combinations of materials.
My sculptures are primarily made from stainless steel and are TIG welded. I didn't start there. Some of my earliest pieces were made from copper-coated steel brazing rod that I soldered together. They worked, but they weren't particularly attractive and eventually rusted where soldering had removed the copper coating. I moved on to brass, which was much better, but soldered structures could still be delicate.
Eventually I moved to welded stainless steel, and it solved many of those problems. It's strong, clean looking and doesn't need paint to protect it. Welding also allows me to build much larger structures than I could reasonably make with soldered joints.
The balls themselves can vary too. I primarily use glass marbles because they're durable, visually interesting and available in a huge variety of colors and patterns. The contrast between colorful glass marbles and stainless steel is also a big part of the look of my work.
Are Rolling Ball Sculptures Kinetic Art?
Yes. A rolling ball sculpture is a form of kinetic art because movement is an essential part of the work.
The sculpture can still be visually interesting when it's sitting still. I spend a lot of time thinking about the shape of the frame, the curves of the tracks and the balance of the larger elements. Loops and spirals create interesting forms even when there isn't a ball traveling through them.
But an RBS really comes alive when a ball is released. Once it's moving, you aren't looking at one fixed composition anymore. Balls appear in different places, mechanical elements move, switches change paths and your eyes are pulled from one part of the sculpture to another. Sound becomes part of it too. You hear balls rolling along the rails, dropping onto elements and interacting with different parts of the sculpture.
That's what makes kinetic art different from something that exists only as a static object. Time and movement become part of the artwork.
Do Rolling Ball Sculptures Have to Be Large?
Not at all. I've made rolling ball sculptures small enough to sit on a desk and others large enough to fill an entire wall.
Tabletop sculptures are nice because you can get close to the mechanism and watch everything happening in a relatively small space. They're also where manual and semi-automatic designs work particularly well. Wall-mounted pieces can become much larger without taking up floor space, while free-standing sculptures allow tracks to move through three dimensions rather than primarily across a flat plane.
I've built rolling ball sculptures for private homes, hospitals, museums, businesses and exhibits. The basic principle remains remarkably similar regardless of size. The ball begins with some height and gravity brings it through the sculpture. Everything I build between those two points determines what kind of journey it has.
How Is a Rolling Ball Sculpture Designed?
My own design process is much more organic than people sometimes expect. I rarely draw an entire sculpture before I build it. I may know the overall size, shape, starting point and some of the major elements, but I don't normally have every track planned in advance.
I start with the frame and establish the major mechanical components. On a motorized sculpture that includes the lift. On a manual or semi-automatic piece, the release mechanism and marble queue become important starting points instead. I need to know where the balls are beginning and where they're ultimately going to end before I can fill in everything between them.
Then I begin adding the larger elements and routing the connecting tracks around them. As I work, I run a ball through each new section. That tells me whether the section works, but it also tells me the speed and direction I'm handing to the next section. In that sense, the behavior of the ball becomes part of the design process.
After more than 20 years, much of that has become intuitive. I can look at a slope or corner and have a pretty good idea how the ball will behave. I still test it, though. What looks right and what actually works aren't always the same thing.
Is a Rolling Ball Sculpture a Machine or a Sculpture?
For me, it's a little bit of both. I tend to think I'm building a machine that becomes art when it's finished. The engineering has to work first. A beautiful section of track isn't very useful if the marble falls off every third trip. A release mechanism has to release correctly, a lift needs to be reliable if there is one, and the tracks need to control the ball well enough that the sculpture works consistently.
At the same time, I care very much about how all of that machinery looks. I balance large elements across the sculpture, fill the available space, shape the frame and use the curves of the stainless steel rails as part of the composition. Ideally, the engineering and the art stop looking like two separate things.
That's probably the best answer I can give to what is a rolling ball sculpture? It's kinetic art built around the movement of a rolling ball. It can be something you load and operate by hand, something that mechanically releases one ball after another without any electricity, or a motorized sculpture that continuously carries the balls back to the top.
The mechanism can change. The size can change. The materials and elements can change. What remains is the simple thing that fascinated me in the first place: put a ball at the top and give it an interesting way to get to the bottom.
