This one is a pretty unique project of mine. For a while I was using a 3D printer to make different parts that I couldn’t otherwise make in metal. The black and white bowls on this desktop Rolling Ball Sculpture are what I like to call “gravity wells.”

This desktop isn’t motorized — it’s hand activated. Press the lever at the bottom and release as many balls as you like onto two different tracks.

Track one twists and turns toward the bottom, winding around and between the upper three gravity wells. It eventually empties into the fourth and final gravity well, where the ball spins around and around before dropping through the center and lining up at the bottom, waiting to be put back at the top.

Track two starts with a ball-collecting tipping arm that can be adjusted to tip with anywhere from one to four marbles. By adding or removing a ball from the counterweight basket, you can change how many it collects before releasing them. From there, the marbles travel through the upper three gravity wells. They’re fun to watch as the balls spin around and around several times before finally dropping through the center.

Those first three gravity wells all empty into the fourth and final well, where the two tracks merge together for one last spin before the balls return to the bottom.

As always, 100% stainless steel and TIG welded.
