A Good Day to Roll is a racing-themed rolling ball sculpture designed with one question in mind: which marble will make it to the bottom first?
Choose your marble from the collector at the top and watch the race begin. The tracks are deliberately designed to give the marbles plenty of opportunities to mix things up along the way. Different paths and kinetic elements allow them to gain ground, lose positions and pass one another as they work their way through the sculpture. The marble that starts in front isn't necessarily the one that finishes there.
A couple of tracks fill the upper quarter of the sculpture. Five marbles collect before being released together onto a flat steel plate. They roll up the plate, reverse direction, and separate onto two different paths. Each path leads to a large bowl where the marbles circle around and around before eventually dropping through the center.
The two paths then enter opposite sides of an enormous smile-shaped plate. Here the marbles roll back and forth, mixing up their positions again before exiting onto two more paths. Those paths eventually merge onto a huge, curving flat steel plate near the bottom—and this is where the race can really change.
From that final plate there are four possible exits, each with a different length of track to the finish. A marble that has been trailing the entire race can suddenly find the shortest route, jump ahead of the others and steal the win at the last moment. Until the marbles actually reach the bottom, nobody knows which one is going to get there first.
At 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall, there is plenty of room for the 1" glass marbles to spread out and change positions. A variable-speed chain lift continually carries them back to the starting point for another race—and another chance to pick the winner.
Pick a marble. Follow it through the chaos. Root for your favorite.
Many possible paths—but only one winner.
Made entirely from stainless steel, TIG welded and finished in gloss red powder coating.
