Around the World is a three-foot-diameter rolling ball sculpture built entirely from stainless steel. The round frame is made with six curved ribs that create the overall globe shape. A helical lift runs vertically through the center and carries the one-inch colorful glass marbles back to the top. The lift is powered by a DC motor with a speed controller, allowing the sculpture to be slowed down or sped up depending on how much activity you want.

There are four separate tracks. The first runs through a tall, skinny spiral that extends nearly the full height of the sculpture. The second is a long series of loop-de-loops ending with a backspin exit. The third combines three gravity wells and three spirals, alternating between them as the marbles work their way down. A ball collector at the top of this track gathers three marbles before releasing all three together through the series.

The fourth track is the longest and spends much of its run wrapping around the inside circumference of the frame. This track includes one complete circumference of horizontal zigzag, followed by a large serpentine section that travels approximately three-quarters of the way around the sculpture. The long wrapping track helps fill the open areas between the other elements and is a big part of what gives the sculpture its round, globe-like appearance.

With four very different tracks, an adjustable-speed helical lift, multiple-ball releases, loops, spirals, gravity wells, zigzags and serpentine track, Around the World has a lot going on while still keeping the overall design balanced within the spherical frame.
