Sculpture: Long Way Around #355

Tracks: Three
Lift: Motorized helical lift with adjustable speed
Operation: Continuous
Material: Handcrafted stainless steel

Long Way Around is a tabletop Rolling Ball Sculpture built around the idea that getting from the top back to the bottom does not need to happen quickly. Instead of following a short, direct route, the marbles travel through three different tracks filled with spirals, curves, changes of direction, and overlapping sections before eventually returning to the lift.

A motorized helical lift carries the marbles back to the top, and its speed can be adjusted to suit your mood. You can slow it down for a more relaxed pace or speed it up when you want more movement throughout the sculpture. Once a marble reaches the top, it is directed onto one of the three tracks.

The first track features a loop-d-loop that sends the marble spinning into a stainless steel collector plate. The second track includes a series of three tall, skinny spirals. At the final spiral, the marble circles around and around before dropping out and returning to the lift.

The third and longest track takes a much more winding route through the sculpture. It includes wavy track, numerous back-and-forth sections, a flat spiral, a long horizontal zig-zag, and several tight hairpin turns. The track changes direction repeatedly and weaves through the frame, giving the sculpture its name.

Like all of my Rolling Ball Sculptures, Long Way Around is handcrafted from stainless steel and designed to run continuously. The three tracks overlap and weave through the frame, giving you something different to watch depending on which marble catches your eye. It provides plenty of movement without being overly large, making it a good size for a home, office, waiting room, or any other space where you want something mechanical and interesting to watch.
